Erythromycin

Erythromycin is an antibiotic prescribed for certain infections caused by bacteria.

How should it be used?

This medication is available in delayed-release capsule form.

  • Take with a full glass of water within 2 hours of eating. May be taken with food if you get stomach (gastro) upset.

Special Precautions/Instructions

Tell your doctor about all of the medications (including over the counter), vitamins, herbal products, and supplements that you take before you start taking this medicine.

Tell your doctor if you:

  • Have a problem (hypersensitivity) or allergic to erythromycin or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Have liver or kidney problems
  • Have or have ever had an irregular heart beat
  • Have myasthenia gravis
  • Are currently taking anti-coagulants
  • Are pregnant, intend to become pregnant or are breastfeeding
  • Take all of the prescription, even if you feel better prior to finishing all of medication.
  • DO NOT drink or eat foods containing grapefruit or grapefruit juice while taking this medication.

This medicine should not be taken if you are taking:

  • terfenadine
  • astemizole
  • pimozide
  • cisapride

Side Effects

Side effects include:

  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • diarrhea
  • abdominal pain
  • rash
  • fever

Contact your doctor if you experience diarrhea and/or fever, and do not treat yourself for diarrhea by taking an over the counter medication.

Contact your doctor immediately if you experience signs of an allergic reaction including:

  • Diarrhea
  • Feeling sick
  • Fever, shivering/chills, rash
  • Muscle and bone pain
  • Kidney problems (changes in the amount of urine or color of urine)
  • Tiredness, dizziness
  • Itching
  • Swelling
  • Trouble breathing

Storage Conditions

This medication should be stored below 86 degrees F. Keep out of reach of children and protect from light. Protect from moisture and extreme heat.

Emergency/Overdose

Call the national poison control center 1-800-222-1222 or 911 in the event of overdose. Symptoms of an overdose include vomiting, diarrhea, sore throat, fever, chills, and other signs of infection.

Erythromycin Ingredients

-erythromycin base, cellulosic plymers, citrate ester, D&C Red No. 30, D&C Yellow No. 10, magnesium stearate and povidone. The capsule shell contains: FD&C Blue No. 1, FD&C Red No. 3, gelatin, and titanium dioxide.
