Atropine reduces spasms in the bladder, stomach, and intestine. Diphenoxylate is an antidiarrheal medication. Together (Lomotil) they treat diarrhea.

How should it be used?

This medication is available in tablet and liquid forms.

  • DO NOT EXCEED RECOMMENDED DOSAGE
  • The liquid form should be used in children younger than 13 years old.
  • Use a special plastic dropper for giving the liquid medicine to children.
  • Space the dosing time evenly during the day and take at the same time each day.
  • Drink a lot of water while taking this medicine.
  • It may take up to 48 hours of using this medicine before your symptoms improve.
  • DO NOT share this medication with others.

Special Precautions/Instructions

Tell your doctor about all of the medications (including over the counter), vitamins, herbal products, and supplements you are using before you start taking this medicine.

Tell your doctor if you:

  • Have a problem (hypersensitivity) to diphenoxylate hydrochloride, atropine sulfate, or anything in this medicine.
  • Have liver or renal (kidney) problems or obstructive jaundice
  • Have diarrhea associated with bacteria
  • Have colitis
  • Have Down’s syndrome
  • Are dehydrated
  • Are pregnant, plan on getting pregnant, or breastfeeding

This medicine can cause side effects that may impair your thinking or reactions. Be careful if you drive or do anything where you need to be awake and alert.

DON’T use alcohol, barbiturates, and tranquilizers while on Lomotil.

Side Effects

The most common side effects include: dizziness, drowsiness, headache, nausea, vomiting, numbness of hands or feet, dry mouth, & dry skin

Contact your doctor immediately if you experience signs of an allergic reaction including:

  • Diarrhea
  • Feeling sick
  • Fever, shivering/chills, rash
  • Muscle and bone pain
  • Kidney problems (changes in the amount of urine or color of urine)
  • Tiredness, dizziness
  • Itching
  • Swelling
  • Trouble breathing

Call your doctor immediately if you have abdominal pain or distention.

Also, contact your doctor if you are not feeling better after 48 hours.

Storage Conditions

This medication should be kept in a child-resistant container and out of the reach of children, since an overdosage may result in severe, even fatal, respiratory depression.

This medicine can be abused so you should keep it in a safe place to protect it from theft and from others taking the medication.

Selling or giving away this medicine is dangerous and against the law.

Emergency/Overdose

Call the national poison control center 1-800-222-1222 or 911 in the event of overdose. Symptoms of an overdose include vomiting, diarrhea, sore throat, fever, chills, and other signs of infection.

Pediatric Use

  • Lomotil may be used as an adjunct to the treatment of diarrhea but should be accompanied by appropriate fluid and electrolyte therapy, if needed.
  • LOMOTIL IS NOT RECOMMENDED FOR CHILDREN UNDER 2 YEARS OF AGE.
  • Lomotil should be used with special caution in young children because of the greater variability of response in this age group.

Lomotil Ingredients

-tablets: diphenoxylate hydrochloride, atropine sulfate, acacia, corn starch, magnesium stearate, sorbitol, sucrose, and talc
-liquid: diphenoxylate hydrochloride, atropine sulfate, cherry flavor, citric acid, ethyl alcohol 15%, FD&C Yellow No. 6, glycerin, sodium phosphate, sorbitol, and water
