Your doctor may order a rectal suction biopsy if Hirshsprung’s disease (a disease of the large intestine) is suspected. This disease is typically diagnosed in newborns, as babies with Hirshsprung’s disease are unable to pass stool due to lack of certain nerve cells. Older infants and children that are diagnosed usually suffer from constipation as a symptom of the disease.

A biopsy is a small sample of tissue taken from your body to be tested for a certain disease or condition. In a rectal suction biopsy, your doctor will take a small piece of tissue from your rectum using a very small suction instrument that is inserted a short distance into your rectum.

After the biopsy, you will be free to go back to your normal daily activities, and you will be contacted with results.
